【課題】簡便な方法で、発光強度の強い所望の色合いの発光、特に赤色を含む発光や白色の発光を実現する半導体発光素子を提供する。【解決手段】本発明の半導体発光素子30は、サファイア基板31と、GaNからなる下地層32と、GaNからなるn型コンタクト層33と、n型のAl0.15Ga0.85Nからなるn型クラッド層34と、In0.15Ga0.85N井戸層とGaN障壁層とが交互に3周期積層された量子井戸構造からなる発光層35と、p型Al0.15Ga0.85Nからなるp型クラッド層36と、Al0.15Ga0.85N層とIn0.2Ga0.8N層とがそれぞれ3nmの厚さで複数周期積層され、希土類元素のEuがドープされたp型コンタクト層37とを備えている。【選択図】図1
